Privacy policy

This is the privacy policy shown inside Salam Signal. It sets out what we collect, how your reports are kept, and the choices available to you.

Version 2026-07-19 Last updated 22 August 2026

Who we are

Salam Signal is a service for recording hate incidents and alerting people you trust. You set up an account with a name and a phone number, so your reports stay tied to you and we can reach you if you need help.

What we collect

The name you go by, the phone number (and any recovery email) you sign in with, the reports you choose to write, and the contacts you add. If you allow it, we use your location only at the moment you press SOS. We do not track it in the background.

Information that can reveal sensitive things

Using an app for hate incidents can suggest your race, religion, sexual orientation or disability, even if you never tell us. UK law treats that as sensitive information, so we only handle it with your clear permission, which you give when you sign up and can withdraw in Settings.

How your reports are kept

Report content is encrypted, on your phone and on our servers, so outsiders cannot read it. Because we manage the keys that protect it on our servers, we could technically read it if we ever had to, but we do not, and every access is logged. A report stays yours alone until you tap Share, which turns it into a PDF and opens your phone's share options, so you choose who, if anyone, ever sees it.

Where your data lives

Your data is stored in the UK. We do not sell it or use it for advertising.

Your choices

You can download everything on your account, or delete your account, at any time from Settings. Deleting removes your data, except where the law requires us to keep something for a set time.

The panic button

Pressing SOS sends a text to your trusted contacts, including your location if you've allowed it. It does not contact emergency services for you. For an emergency, always call 999.

Where your SOS location goes

When you press SOS, your phone sends your location to our server, which writes the message and passes it to the mobile network so your trusted contacts receive it. Only the contacts you added and confirmed are sent it, nobody else. We store the location encrypted, and delete it about a week later. The record that an alert happened, and who it reached, is kept longer so you can check what was sent on your behalf.

The people you add as contacts

To send an alert we keep your trusted contacts' mobile numbers, encrypted. Contacts are phone numbers only. We do not collect their email. They are not messaged when you add them; they only receive a text if you press SOS. They can opt out of further alerts by replying STOP. You can remove any of them from Settings.

Questions or requests

You can make any of these choices yourself in the app, under Settings, including downloading or deleting your data. The full privacy policy, published before launch, sets out how to reach our data protection contact. We aim to respond within one month.
